Work Hours Calculator
Add multiple clock-in and clock-out periods to calculate your total hours worked, unpaid breaks and decimal work hours.
Work Sessions
Add each period you worked during the day.
What Is a Work Hours Calculator?
A Work Hours Calculator helps you calculate the total amount of time worked across one or more clock-in and clock-out periods.
It is especially useful when your workday is divided into multiple sessions, such as working in the morning, taking a long gap, and returning for another work period later in the day.
The ShiftCalco Work Hours Calculator can add multiple work sessions, subtract unpaid breaks, handle work periods that cross midnight and convert your total working time into decimal hours.
How to Use the Work Hours Calculator
Enter each period you worked into the calculator above:
- Enter your first clock-in time.
- Enter your clock-out time.
- Add any unpaid break taken during that work session.
- Click Add Work Session if you worked another period.
- Repeat the process for each additional work session.
- Select a time-rounding option if required.
- Click Calculate Work Hours.
The calculator will show your total time on the clock, total unpaid breaks, total hours worked and decimal work hours.
Work Hours Calculation Example
Suppose you worked two separate periods during the same day:
- Work Session 1: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- Work Session 2: 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM
The first session is 4 hours and the second session is 4 hours 30 minutes.
Your total hours worked would therefore be:
4 hours + 4 hours 30 minutes = 8 hours 30 minutes
In decimal format:
8 hours 30 minutes = 8.50 hours
How Are Hours Worked Calculated?
For each work session, the calculator calculates the time between your clock-in and clock-out times.
The basic calculation is:
Clock-Out Time − Clock-In Time = Session Duration
If you enter an unpaid break:
Session Duration − Unpaid Break = Hours Worked
When you enter multiple work sessions, ShiftCalco adds the calculated working time from each session together.
How to Calculate Multiple Work Sessions
Not every workday consists of one continuous shift. Some people clock in and out several times during the same day.
For example:
- Session 1: 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM
- Session 2: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Session 3: 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Each session lasts 3 hours, so the total working time is:
3 + 3 + 3 = 9 hours
Instead of calculating each period manually, you can add every session to the Work Hours Calculator and calculate the combined total automatically.
How Do Unpaid Breaks Affect Work Hours?
An unpaid break is deducted from the time counted as hours worked.
For example, imagine you work from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The total time between those times is 8 hours.
If you take a 30-minute unpaid break:
8 hours − 30 minutes = 7 hours 30 minutes worked
In decimal format, this equals 7.50 hours.
If you need to calculate multiple paid and unpaid breaks within a shift, use the Shift Calculator With Break .
Total Time on Clock vs Total Hours Worked
Total time on the clock and total hours worked may be different when unpaid breaks are included.
Total time on the clock is the combined duration of your entered clock-in and clock-out sessions before unpaid breaks are deducted.
Total hours worked is the remaining time after the unpaid breaks entered for those sessions are removed.
For example:
- Time on clock: 8 hours
- Unpaid break: 30 minutes
- Total hours worked: 7 hours 30 minutes
What Are Decimal Work Hours?
Decimal hours express working time as a decimal number rather than hours and minutes.
This format can be useful for timesheets, payroll calculations, invoicing and other situations where working hours need to be represented as decimal values.
| Hours and Minutes | Decimal Hours |
|---|---|
| 6 hours 15 minutes | 6.25 |
| 6 hours 30 minutes | 6.50 |
| 6 hours 45 minutes | 6.75 |
| 7 hours | 7.00 |
| 7 hours 30 minutes | 7.50 |
| 8 hours 15 minutes | 8.25 |
| 8 hours 30 minutes | 8.50 |
| 8 hours 45 minutes | 8.75 |
Remember that 30 minutes equals 0.50 hours, not 0.30.
Can I Calculate Overnight Work Hours?
Yes. If one of your work sessions starts before midnight and finishes after midnight, the calculator treats the clock-out time as being on the following day.
For example:
- Clock In: 10:00 PM
- Clock Out: 2:00 AM
- Session Duration: 4 hours
If your main goal is to calculate an individual night shift, use the Night Shift Calculator .
For overnight shifts with multiple paid and unpaid breaks, use the Overnight Shift Calculator .
What Is Time Rounding?
Time rounding adjusts the calculated duration of a work session to a selected interval, such as 5, 10 or 15 minutes.
For example, when 15-minute rounding is selected, the calculated session duration is rounded to the nearest 15-minute interval.
If you want the calculator to use the calculated session duration without rounding, select No Rounding.
Rounding rules used by employers can vary. The calculator applies only the rounding option you select.
