What Is an Overtime Calculator?

An Overtime Calculator helps you calculate regular working hours, overtime hours, overtime pay and total estimated earnings based on your hourly rate.

If you work more than your regular-hours threshold, the calculator separates your standard hours from your overtime hours and applies the overtime rate you select.

For example, if you work 50 hours and overtime begins after 40 hours, the calculator treats the first 40 hours as regular time and the remaining 10 hours as overtime.

You can use the ShiftCalco Overtime Calculator with common overtime multipliers such as time and a half (1.5×), double time (2×), or enter a custom overtime hourly rate.

How to Use the Overtime Calculator

To calculate your overtime hours and estimated pay, enter your work details into the calculator above.

  1. Enter your total hours worked.
  2. Enter the number of hours after which overtime begins.
  3. Enter your regular hourly rate.
  4. Select your overtime rate, such as 1.5× or 2×.
  5. Use the custom overtime rate option if you are paid a specific overtime hourly rate.
  6. Click Calculate Overtime.

The calculator will show your regular hours, overtime hours, regular pay, overtime hourly rate, overtime pay and total estimated earnings.

Overtime Calculation Example

Suppose you worked 50 hours, your normal hourly rate is €16, and overtime begins after 40 hours. Your overtime rate is time and a half, or 1.5×.

Your hours would be divided into:

  • Regular Hours: 40 hours
  • Overtime Hours: 10 hours

Your regular pay would be:

40 × €16 = €640

Your overtime hourly rate would be:

€16 × 1.5 = €24 per hour

Your overtime pay would be:

10 × €24 = €240

Your total estimated pay would therefore be:

€640 + €240 = €880

How Are Overtime Hours Calculated?

Overtime hours are calculated by subtracting your regular-hours threshold from your total hours worked.

The basic formula is:

Total Hours Worked − Regular Hours Threshold = Overtime Hours

For example, if you worked 47 hours and your overtime threshold is 40 hours:

47 − 40 = 7 overtime hours

If your total hours do not exceed the threshold you enter, the calculator will show zero overtime hours.

If you first need to calculate how many hours you worked during the week, use the Weekly Hours Calculator .

How Is Overtime Pay Calculated?

Overtime pay depends on your regular hourly rate, overtime multiplier and number of overtime hours.

First, calculate your overtime hourly rate:

Regular Hourly Rate × Overtime Multiplier = Overtime Hourly Rate

Then calculate your overtime earnings:

Overtime Hours × Overtime Hourly Rate = Overtime Pay

For example, if your regular rate is $20 per hour and your overtime rate is 1.5×:

$20 × 1.5 = $30 per overtime hour

If you work 5 overtime hours:

5 × $30 = $150 overtime pay

What Is Time and a Half?

Time and a half means an overtime rate equal to 1.5 times your regular hourly rate.

For example, if your normal hourly rate is $18:

$18 × 1.5 = $27 per hour

If a 1.5× overtime rate applies to your overtime hours, your calculated overtime rate would therefore be $27 per hour.

What Is Double Time?

Double time refers to a rate equal to 2 times your regular hourly rate.

For example, if your normal hourly rate is $20:

$20 × 2 = $40 per hour

If you worked 4 hours at a 2× rate, the estimated pay for those hours would be:

4 × $40 = $160

Common Overtime Rate Examples

The table below shows how different overtime multipliers affect an hourly rate of $20.

Overtime Multiplier $20 Regular Rate
1.0× $20.00/hour
1.25× $25.00/hour
1.5× (Time and a Half) $30.00/hour
2× (Double Time) $40.00/hour
2.5× $50.00/hour
3× $60.00/hour

The multiplier you should use depends on the pay arrangement that applies to your work.

How to Calculate Total Pay With Overtime

Your total estimated pay combines your regular earnings and overtime earnings.

The formula is:

Regular Pay + Overtime Pay = Total Estimated Pay

For example:

  • Regular Pay: $800
  • Overtime Pay: $225

Your estimated total pay would be:

$800 + $225 = $1,025

The calculator above performs both calculations automatically.

What Is an Overtime Threshold?

An overtime threshold is the number of hours you enter before additional hours are treated as overtime for the calculation.

For example, if you enter a threshold of 40 hours and work 45 hours, the calculator will separate your time into 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours.

Overtime thresholds are not the same everywhere. They may depend on local employment law, your employer, your contract, your industry or other workplace rules.

For this reason, ShiftCalco allows you to enter your own overtime threshold instead of assuming that the same threshold applies to everyone.

Custom Overtime Hourly Rate

Not every employee receives overtime using a simple multiplier of their regular hourly wage.

Your employment arrangement may specify a particular overtime hourly rate.

In that situation, select Use a custom overtime hourly rate instead and enter the amount you receive for each overtime hour.

The calculator will use your custom rate instead of multiplying your regular hourly rate.
