What Is an Overnight Shift Calculator?

An Overnight Shift Calculator helps you calculate working hours when a shift starts on one day and finishes after midnight on the following day.

For example, if your shift starts at 8:00 PM and ends at 6:00 AM, the calculator treats the end time as being on the next day.

The ShiftCalco Overnight Shift Calculator can also handle multiple breaks, including both paid and unpaid breaks. It calculates your total shift time, actual working time, paid hours, decimal hours and estimated pay.

How to Use the Overnight Shift Calculator

Enter your overnight shift details into the calculator above and follow these steps:

  1. Enter the time your shift starts.
  2. Enter the time your shift finishes the following day.
  3. Add your first break duration.
  4. Select whether the break is paid or unpaid.
  5. Add additional breaks if needed.
  6. Enter your hourly rate if you want to estimate your pay.
  7. Click Calculate Overnight Shift.

The calculator will show your total shift length, total break time, actual working hours, unpaid break time, paid hours, decimal hours and estimated earnings.

Overnight Shift Calculation Example

Suppose you start work at 8:00 PM and finish at 6:00 AM the next morning.

Your total overnight shift is 10 hours.

During the shift, you take:

  • 30-minute break: Unpaid
  • 15-minute break: Paid

Your total break time is 45 minutes.

After removing both breaks, your actual working time is 9 hours 15 minutes.

Because only the 30-minute unpaid break is deducted from paid time, your paid hours are 9 hours 30 minutes.

In decimal format, your paid time is 9.50 hours.

How Are Overnight Shift Hours Calculated?

An overnight shift crosses midnight, so the end time belongs to the following calendar day.

For example:

  • Shift Start: 10:00 PM
  • Shift End: 6:00 AM

From 10:00 PM until midnight is 2 hours, and from midnight until 6:00 AM is another 6 hours.

Therefore:

2 hours + 6 hours = 8 hours

ShiftCalco performs this calculation automatically, so you do not need to manually split the shift before and after midnight.

How Do Multiple Breaks Affect an Overnight Shift?

Some overnight workers take more than one break during a shift. For example, you may take a meal break and one or more shorter rest breaks.

The Overnight Shift Calculator allows you to add multiple breaks and mark each one as either paid or unpaid.

All entered breaks are removed when calculating actual working time. Only unpaid breaks are deducted when calculating paid hours.

You can also use the Shift Calculator With Break when your main goal is to calculate a shift with multiple paid and unpaid breaks.

Paid Breaks vs Unpaid Breaks

A paid break remains part of your paid shift time, while an unpaid break is deducted from the hours you are paid for.

For example, imagine your overnight shift is 10 hours long and you take:

  • 30 minutes: Unpaid
  • 15 minutes: Paid

Your total break time is 45 minutes, so your actual working time is 9 hours 15 minutes.

However, only the 30-minute unpaid break reduces your paid hours. Your paid time is therefore 9 hours 30 minutes.

Actual Working Time vs Paid Hours

Actual working time and paid hours can be different when your shift includes paid breaks.

Actual working time is the amount of time remaining after all entered breaks are removed from the total shift.

Paid hours are calculated after unpaid breaks are deducted. Paid breaks remain included in paid hours.

If all your breaks are unpaid, your actual working time and paid hours will normally be the same.

If some of your breaks are paid, your paid hours may be higher than your actual working time.

Overnight Shift Decimal Hours

Decimal hours convert hours and minutes into a decimal number. This format can be useful for timesheets, payroll calculations and estimating hourly earnings.

Hours and Minutes Decimal Hours
7 hours 15 minutes 7.25
7 hours 30 minutes 7.50
7 hours 45 minutes 7.75
8 hours 30 minutes 8.50
9 hours 15 minutes 9.25
9 hours 30 minutes 9.50

For example, 30 minutes equals 0.50 hours because it is half of one hour.

How to Calculate Overnight Shift Pay

If you are paid by the hour, you can estimate your overnight shift pay using:

Paid Hours × Hourly Rate = Estimated Shift Pay

For example:

  • Paid Hours: 9.50
  • Hourly Rate: €16.00

The estimated pay would be:

9.50 × €16.00 = €152.00

Enter your hourly rate into the calculator above to calculate your estimated pay automatically.

Does the Calculator Include Night Shift Premiums?

The Overnight Shift Calculator uses the hourly rate you enter to estimate your standard shift pay.

It does not automatically add night shift premiums, overtime rates, weekend rates, public holiday rates or other additional payments.

If your employer pays a different hourly rate for overnight work, you can enter that rate in the hourly rate field to estimate your earnings.

If you need to calculate overtime separately, use the Overtime Calculator .

Night Shift Calculator vs Overnight Shift Calculator

Both calculators can be used for work that continues past midnight, but they are designed for slightly different calculations.

The Overnight Shift Calculator is designed for detailed overnight calculations where you may have multiple paid and unpaid breaks.

The Night Shift Calculator provides a simpler way to calculate night shift duration, one unpaid break, paid hours and estimated pay.
