What Is a Night Shift Calculator?

A night shift calculator helps you work out how many hours you worked when your shift crosses midnight.

For example, if your shift starts at 11:00 PM and ends at 7:00 AM, the calculator understands that the end time is on the following day.

It can also deduct unpaid break time and show your actual paid hours. If you enter an hourly rate, it can estimate your shift pay as well.

How to Use the Night Shift Calculator

Using the calculator is simple.

Enter your shift start time and shift end time, then add any unpaid break you took during the shift.

Choose whether the shift ends on the same day or the next day / overnight.

If you want to estimate your earnings, enter your hourly rate and select your currency.

Then click Calculate My Shift.

The calculator will show:

  • Total shift length
  • Unpaid break time
  • Paid working hours
  • Decimal hours
  • Estimated pay

Night Shift Calculation Example

Suppose your shift starts at 11:00 PM and finishes at 7:00 AM the next morning.

Your total shift length is:

8 hours

If you take a 30-minute unpaid break, your paid working time becomes:

7 hours 30 minutes

In decimal format, this is:

7.50 hours

If your hourly rate is €15, your estimated pay would be:

€112.50

Calculation:

7.50 × €15 = €112.50

How Are Overnight Shift Hours Calculated?

Overnight shifts need to be treated differently from normal same-day shifts because the end time is after midnight.

For example:

Start: 10:00 PM
End: 6:00 AM

The calculator treats 6:00 AM as the following day.

This gives a total shift length of:

8 hours

Without this adjustment, a standard time calculation could incorrectly treat the end time as being earlier than the start time.

How Do Unpaid Breaks Affect Your Working Hours?

An unpaid break is deducted from your total shift length.

For example:

Total shift: 9 hours
Unpaid break: 45 minutes

Your paid working time would be:

8 hours 15 minutes

Only unpaid breaks should normally be deducted when calculating paid hours.

If your break is paid, you can enter 0 minutes in the unpaid break field.

What Are Decimal Hours?

Decimal hours express working time as a decimal number instead of hours and minutes.

This format is often useful for payroll, timesheets and wage calculations.

For example:

Hours and Minutes Decimal Hours
7 hours 15 minutes 7.25
7 hours 30 minutes 7.50
7 hours 45 minutes 7.75
8 hours 8.00

Thirty minutes equals 0.50 hours because 30 minutes is half of one hour.

Night Shift Pay Calculation

If you are paid by the hour, your estimated shift pay can be calculated using:

Paid Hours × Hourly Rate = Estimated Pay

Example:

Paid hours: 8.25
Hourly rate: €16

8.25 × €16 = €132.00

The ShiftCalco Night Shift Calculator can calculate this automatically when you enter your hourly rate.

The result is an estimate only. Your actual pay may be different if your employer applies overtime, night premiums, weekend rates, holiday rates, taxes or other deductions.

Same-Day Shift vs Overnight Shift

A same-day shift starts and ends on the same calendar day.

Example:

9:00 AM → 5:00 PM

An overnight shift continues into the next calendar day.

Example:

11:00 PM → 7:00 AM

When using the calculator, select Next Day / Overnight if your shift continues past midnight.
