9 Day Fortnight Calculator

The 9 Day Fortnight Calculator helps you work out how many hours you need to work each day when your total fortnightly hours are spread across 9 working days instead of 10.

Enter your total fortnight target hours, daily start time, unpaid break and preferred day off. The calculator can estimate your required daily working hours, typical finish time and a Week 1 and Week 2 breakdown.

What Is a 9 Day Fortnight?

A 9 day fortnight is a compressed work schedule where an employee works 9 days across a two-week period instead of the more traditional 10 working days.

The same total fortnightly hours may be compressed into fewer working days, which means some or all working days can be longer.

For example, if your fortnight target is 80 hours and those hours are divided equally across 9 working days, you would need to work approximately 8 hours and 53 minutes per working day.

How to Use the 9 Day Fortnight Calculator

  1. Enter your total target hours for the fortnight.
  2. Choose your usual daily start time.
  3. Select your unpaid break duration.
  4. Select the weekday you plan to take off.
  5. Choose how you want your hours distributed.
  6. Click Calculate 9 Day Fortnight.

The calculator will then show your required daily hours, estimated finish time, fortnight total and a two-week hours breakdown.

How Are 9 Day Fortnight Hours Calculated?

If you choose to divide your fortnightly hours equally across all 9 working days, the basic calculation is:

Daily Working Hours = Fortnight Target Hours ÷ 9

For an 80-hour fortnight:

80 ÷ 9 = approximately 8.89 hours per day

That is approximately 8 hours and 53 minutes of working time per day.

80 Hour 9 Day Fortnight Example

A common compressed schedule is based on an 80-hour fortnight.

  • Fortnight Target: 80 hours
  • Working Days: 9
  • Average Working Time: about 8h 53m per day
  • Daily Unpaid Break: 30 minutes
  • Start Time: 8:00 AM
  • Estimated Finish Time: about 5:23 PM

The exact result may vary slightly depending on how working minutes are rounded.

How Long Is Each Day in a 9 Day Fortnight?

The daily working time depends on your total fortnight target and how those hours are distributed.

Fortnight Hours Working Days Average Hours Per Day
72 hours 9 8h 00m
75 hours 9 8h 20m
76 hours 9 About 8h 27m
80 hours 9 About 8h 53m
90 hours 9 10h 00m

9 Day Fortnight With a 30 Minute Break

An unpaid break normally increases the total time between your start and finish times because the break does not count toward the working hours entered into this calculator.

For example, if your required daily working time is 8 hours 53 minutes and you take a 30-minute unpaid break, your total time from starting work to finishing is approximately 9 hours 23 minutes.

Starting at 8:00 AM would therefore produce an estimated finish time of approximately 5:23 PM.

Equal Hours Across 9 Days

The Equal Hours mode divides your total fortnight target evenly across all 9 working days.

This option is useful when you want each working day to have approximately the same number of hours.

For an 80-hour fortnight:

  • 80 total hours
  • 9 working days
  • Approximately 8h 53m of work each day

8 Extended Days and 1 Standard Day

Some 9 day fortnight arrangements do not divide the hours equally. Instead, one day may remain at a standard length while the other eight working days are extended.

The calculator includes an option for this type of schedule.

You can enter the number of working hours for the standard day. The calculator subtracts those hours from your fortnight target and divides the remaining hours across the other eight working days.

The calculation is:

Extended Day Hours = (Fortnight Target Hours - Standard Day Hours) ÷ 8

Example: 80 Hours With One 8 Hour Standard Day

Suppose your fortnight target is 80 hours and one of the nine working days remains an 8-hour day.

The remaining 72 hours are divided across eight extended days:

(80 - 8) ÷ 8 = 9 hours

Your schedule would therefore contain:

  • 8 extended days of 9 working hours each
  • 1 standard day of 8 working hours
  • 80 total working hours across the fortnight

With a 30-minute unpaid break, a 9-hour working day starting at 8:00 AM would have an estimated finish time of 5:30 PM.

Week 1 and Week 2 Breakdown

A 9 day fortnight normally contains one five-day workweek and one four-day workweek.

In Equal Hours mode, if your 80-hour fortnight is divided evenly:

  • Week 1: approximately 44 hours 27 minutes across 5 working days
  • Week 2: approximately 35 hours 33 minutes across 4 working days

Together, the two weeks equal approximately 80 working hours.

Choosing Your Day Off

The calculator allows you to select a weekday as your scheduled day off during the fortnight.

Friday is often convenient for demonstrating a four-day second week, but you can select Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on your intended schedule.

Selecting the day off changes the schedule description but does not change your total fortnight working hours.

Does a 9 Day Fortnight Mean Fewer Working Hours?

Not necessarily. A 9 day fortnight usually refers to how the working days are arranged, not automatically to a reduction in total contracted hours.

For example, a person with an 80-hour fortnight may still complete the full 80 hours but compress those hours into 9 days instead of 10.

The exact schedule depends on the hours and arrangements that apply to the worker.

Does the Day Off Count as Annual Leave?

This calculator does not determine how a compressed workday or scheduled day off should be treated for employment, payroll or leave purposes.

It only calculates working-time estimates based on the schedule values you enter.

9 Day Fortnight Calculator vs Weekly Hours Calculator

These two ShiftCalco tools serve different purposes.

The 9 Day Fortnight Calculator starts with a target number of hours for a two-week period and helps you create a compressed 9-day schedule.

The Weekly Hours Calculator is designed to add working hours from an existing Monday-to-Sunday schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours per day is an 80-hour 9 day fortnight?

If 80 hours are divided equally across 9 working days, the average is approximately 8 hours and 53 minutes of working time per day.

How do you calculate a 9 day fortnight?

For an equal-hours schedule, divide your total fortnight working hours by 9. For example, 80 hours divided by 9 is approximately 8.89 decimal hours per working day.

How many days do you work in two weeks?

In a 9 day fortnight arrangement, you work 9 days during the two-week period and have one additional non-working day compared with a standard five-day-per-week pattern.

What is a 9 day fortnight with one day off?

It generally means working 9 days over two weeks, with one weekday that would otherwise have been a normal working day scheduled as a non-working day.

Can I use different hours on different days?

Yes. The calculator includes a mode where eight days can use one extended working time and one day can use a separate standard number of hours.

Does the calculator include unpaid breaks?

Yes. You can enter an unpaid break per working day. The break is added to the working time when calculating the estimated finish time.

Does the calculator calculate overtime?

No. The calculator plans a compressed fortnight schedule and does not determine whether any hours qualify for overtime.

For separate regular and overtime calculations, use the Overtime Calculator .

Can I calculate my pay for a 9 day fortnight?

This calculator focuses on working time and schedule planning rather than pay.

You can use the Shift Pay Calculator for individual shift earnings or the Hourly to Salary Calculator for broader earnings estimates.
